UPCOMING TRIPS / PAST TRIPS
Annual trips, both in France and in the United States, are organized for small groups
of French Heritage Society members and guests who visit historically and artistically
significant sites, many of which are not ordinarily open to the public. These cultural
excursions invariably include hospitality at privately owned châteaux and houses and
visits to monuments that have received French Heritage Society support for restoration
work. The purpose of these trips is to deepen understanding of the two countries and
their heritage and to strengthen the bonds of friendship that unite them. Each trip
focuses on a particular region or style of architecture and is led by qualified experts.
Trips have explored a variety of subjects, including “Royal Palaces and Noble Dwellings
in Paris and the Ile de France,” “Aix-en-Provence and the Landscapes of Cézanne,”
“The French Legacy in Louisiana,” “French Monuments in Rome,” and “In the Footsteps
of Alexis de Tocqueville.”

From Grand to Romantic to Contemporary: Private Gardens in Normandy, France
The private gardens that we will be privileged
to visit in Normandy embody a rich combination
of styles, cultures, and time periods which
find their expression in the region’s rolling hills
and winding valleys. Blessed with a mild climate,
Normandy has a long tradition of garden
arts. Gifted landscape architects have created
gardens there, such as Russell Page, the foremost
talent of his time and renowned for his
gardens at Leeds Castle and at Longleat in
England; Louis Benech, who renovated the 15
hectare Tuileries Gardens in Paris designed by
Le Nôtre in the 17th century; and François
Goffinet, who created many classical gardens
in Europe and in the United States.
